This week the other Mr. B will continue working on the Civil War unit with all classes.

I am preparing a super duper unit on ______ !  We’ll start it after Mr. B leaves in only 8 more days.

This week I actually have it kind of easy.  There are no, I repeat no, small groups still doing work, there are no skype conferences, no special projects of any kind.  I will have plenty of extra time to sit back and eat all the chocolate-chip cookies and milk that you bring in.

I will be finishing up all the final student teaching paperwork and finishing up a grant to make us a 1:2 laptop room.  Well not you, but next years kids-ouch!

Oh wait — there might be another live blog with our Aussie mates Thursday night.   Still waiting to have that verified.

What a nice easy post to write this week!

This week the other Mr. B the ST is staring his unit on the Civil War.

Me?  This is a week to catch up on student teacher paperwork-yuck!  There will be a skype call with an elementary school Thursday at 10:15am from Wisconsin.  They are interviewing students from all 50 states!

There will also be a skype call with Ms. Callahan’s second grade art classes from Kennerly Elementary school, the elementary school that is illustrating our children’s books on 19th Century immigration that will then be sent off to Monarch Academy in Oakland, CA to be read and reviewed and then all the way back to us!

Although not confirmed yet, there will be skype call with Deborah Weingrad the Vice-President of the Palace Production Center who is making a movie on the life of Frederick Douglass. Last week we skyped with Marsha Alibrandi a professor at Fairfield University who is consulting on the film. The call was placed on our Lunchtime Leaders Podcast site.  The student suggestions on the script have been forward right through to the script writers!  The kids hope that after talking to Ms. Weingard that the script will sound a lot less like “old people trying to sound cool.”

There won’t be another blog post with the class from Australia until next week so please stay tuned for that, and we will be getting together with them possibly on May 15(Thurs) at 9:00pm our time, 11:00am their time! Looking for more volunteers–first ten get headsets! Their teacher wrote some very kind words about us after our last get together.  We have been very lucky to hook up with this class.

Just a quickie…

Mr. B has taken over all four classes and is finishing a unit on immigration this week.

I am still working with the small groups that were listed in the previous post. All groups will be done by this Friday.

All groups have a blog post due by this Thursday. The question is on the previous post. Leave your answer on that post, and make a post with your answer on your blog.

Any questions? Please contact me through email or wiki mail, not by leaving comments on the blog. PBogush@wallingford.k12.ct.us

First, here is the question for Hawkesdale and MMS:

What is the most precious item in your life? The one thing that you cannot do without. The thing in life you value the most. This question does leave some room for interpretation. There is no wrong interpretation. Please answer with what pops into your head first. Please do not over think it!

Please post your answer on your own individual blog with a image of the item. The image can be of an item just like yours. So if your turtle is the most precious thing and you don’t have a picture of her, find a copyright free image from the net that looks like your turtle to use. 50,000 bonus points for images that you have created. Then copy and paste your answer to a comment on this post with a link to your blog so that we can view the image.

As promised, this week Mr. B takes over all the classes so you will see me periodically popping in and out of classes. Today he will be starting a unit on immigration that will last for two weeks. There will be four groups of students working outside of Mr. B’s classes. This post will give some insight into what they will be working on for the next two weeks.

First is a group that will be working with Mr. Means’ AP Psychology Class from Lindbergh High School in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Means’ description: “Groups of students will use multi-media instruments to communicate with each other in order to research 19th century psychological treatment theories and institutions. Each group will be responsible for different aspects of the culminating project. The psychology students will assume the responsibility for educating others on the diagnostic approaches and treatments of mental illness during the 19th century, while the social studies students will examine many of the institutions that were constructed during this period, particularly in the New England region.” This will be a real fascinating trip into the changing mindsets of nineteenth century Americans, specifically those living in CT.

The second group will be creating children’s books on 19th Century American Immigration(there titles will be more interesting) for Ms. Callahan’s three second grade art classes from Kennerly Elementary school. We will be doing the research and text, they will be doing the illustrations. It just so happens that her classes are also in St. Louis, MO. We should look for a third school to send them to for review. Would any visitors to this like some? Let me know!

The third group will be working on a project with Young American Heroes. A TV show and 2 websites about Frederick Douglass are being produced this spring and summer in Connecticut. The websites will be launched in September 2008. The television show will be broadcast statewide on CPTV in September 2008 and nationwide on PBS stations in February 2009. The producers are looking for student input and involvement in all aspects of the content for TV and the Web. Our students will be able to join their educator production team and give them creative input on the script, the characters, the curriculum and Web designs, and suggest locations.

The fourth group will be working on a project about Harriet Tubman. This actually came out of a conversation with a student a couple of months ago. There are many historical figures whose names are well known to students. They are so well known that if a student does not know what they accomplished they are embarrassed to ask because they think everyone else knows. It came up that Harriet Tubman was one of these figures. Everyone knows her name, but why? This group will create a 15 minute extravaganza to present to out team on May 2, 2008 in the Auditorium. They will also create a wiki that would allow any visitor to know what impact Harriet Tubman made. A visitor must be able to navigate through everything on the website in 10-15 minutes.

Phew…I think that’s it. A reminder…if you are in one of the above four groups you will be meeting in the library every day during class time starting tomorrow.

Hope everyone on 8-2 is having a great vacation.  I wonder how many of you are crazy enough to check in during  your week off.  Just a reminder — The other Mr. B is taking over all classes when we get back from vacation.

I just wrote to our new mates(do I sound Australian?) from Hawkesdale College in Australia and told them that they could leave their questions on this post and we could figure out how we would like to answer them.  Please check you wiki mail.  I wrote everyone with a few suggestions.  If you are visiting from Hawkesdale, please leave your questions below in the comment discussion.  Depending on how many of our students check in we may be able to figure out how to answer them this week, or will do it next Monday in school.

This week all classes will start to collaboratively blog with Hawkesdale College (podcast) in Victoria, Australia. Please see the assignment below — it is due by Thursday.

Hawkesdale College meets Collaboration Nation

April 6, 2008

Hello from Hawkesdale, Victoria, Australia

Hello, I am Anne Mirtschin, an information technology(computer studies) teacher in Hawkesdale, Victoria, Australia. It is now autumn and any deciduous trees are starting to colour and lose their leaves. We are a small school of 250 students from prep to year 12 (5yrs – 18 yrs). We are hoping to work together, on blogging, with a school from the USA. Their blog page is entitled “Collaboration Nation”.

In order to get to know each other a little better and thereby, evaluate similarities and differences between our two countries, schools and cultures, I would like to ask you two questions.

1. What is the best thing about living where you do?

2. Tell us why your school is unique?

Please write a post answering these questions. Then add them as a comment to my blog. Students from both schools are to do this.

Next week, Mr Bogush will write the question for next week’s post and it is then hoped that one student per week from alternating schools will write a question for posts.

Pretty cool huh?

Ruby will finish up their business plans for the Oregon Trail. Everything must be posted to the wiki by Thursday.

Amethyst, in one last unit before vacation and before Mr. B takes over, will answer a single question this week — What was the greatest invention of the 19th Century?

And a last reminder, make sure you get the images to me for our three word video with Alabama and post them to your blog!

Shhhhh….it’s almost April, then May, then June!.

Ruby — Oregon Trail Business plans due by Thursday

Sapphire, Emerald, Sapphire — Into the studio to record the Oregon Trail Cds. After listening to dress rehearsal on Friday, I realized that these Cds have some serious potential to be exemplars for the rest of the classrooms on the planet who are looking for a fun, informative, funky, collaborative project. I suggest that we take our time and do these right — let’s not rush the recording and if we need more than a couple of takes we do it. I say we also scrap the cheesy sounding midis and do all the music ourselves. I will bring in my guitar and percusion instruments, please bring in any instruments you would like to use. Honestly, I have no idea how long this will take. I will assume it will take three days. Thursday we will take a “test” on the Oregon Trail, and then Friday have a CD release party.

Blog post due Friday:

The next three word video will be done with Highland School in Alabama. You must answer the following question: What three words of advice would you would give one of the Presidental Candidates? The three words will be posted as a blog post and be handed in for the video. You may email me a jpeg image or hand it in on a piece of standard sized paper. I will have my camera in school on Thursday and Friday to take video or still images of any three words that “don’t fit” on a standard piece of paper. Post and words for video are due on Friday.

I know, I know….This is up late again. But here is what I have been working on instead of updating the blog…

This week Amethyst is having a video conference with two of the classes that they are sending their CDs to. TPLC in Kansas and Denton Avenue School in New York. We will have another video conference with Highland School in Alabama to develop a new three word video and in two weeks will start another one with Indian Mills Memorial School in New Jersey. This morning more War of 1812 books was sent off to another school collaborating with us on this project, Monarch Academy in Oakland, CA. And last but not least, we just set up a project for a small group of 8-2 students to start working with an AP Psychology class from Lindbergh High School in St. Louis, MO on a project they will start in May. Oh, and one more thing, another group of ten student will start working on a project on Frederick Douglas in which they could potentially have an impact on the outcome of a new movie about his life.  Pretty cool huh? : )

This week Amethyst is finishing up the writing and designing of their CDs. Next week we go into the recording studio and lay down the tracks. Ruby is working on their Oregon Trail Business Plans which will be published next week.

Monday — Ruby and Amethyst are doing a podcast in response to an invitation from Turning Point Learning Center School in Emporia, Kansas. They just started their state mandated tests and posted a podcast on their thoughts regarding the value of standardized testing. In the next couple of days they will be edited and posted to one of our podcast channels.

Tuesday — Drum roll please! Ruby will be starting their own businesses along the Oregon Trail and Amethyst will be designing, writing, and recording CD’s on the Oregon Trail for elementary students across the country.

Wednesday-Friday — Students will be working in groups to complete the projects

Blog post due Friday:

RUBY — The blog post this week is a response to a post from Tim Holt. Read his post and answer on your blog. After you post on your blog, go back to his and leave a link to yours. See my comment on his blog if you need an example. It might be helpful to read some of the comments and listen to some of the examples left in the comment section of his post. If you need help figuring out his post, he is basically asking: Why should we use technology? Why do you think it is important? Who is listening(or reading) to you? Think before you write. It was helpful for me to break my answer into three parts/reasons, and then start writing. Please be thoughtful and SPELL CHECK your answer. His blog has been getting a lot of publicity and your post will be read by many people. If you are typing you response in a word document first, go to tools, word count, and it will tell you how many words you have written.

AMETHYST — You will be responding to a post from Tom Escott who wrote about the challenges of setting up a virtual classroom. He has left an “assignment” at the bottom. Do the assignment as your blog post. Then go over to his blog and leave a link to you blog in his comments. You might write something like “Great post Mr. Escott. I have responded to your post on my blog http://blogush.edublogs.org. Please everyone do not use those exact words…it would look silly. It you read his post and are confused…don’t think of the assignment from the perspective of a teacher, but from the perspective of a student. The words would be changed to the following:

Assignment:

Your teacher will be absent from your classroom for one week. Being the dedicated student that you are, however, you want to be sure that the momentum you have established is not lost. You would like your classroom to continue as if the teacher were still there.

1. Describe an activity that your teacher can direct as a virtually during their absence.

2. What are the objectives of this activity? What do they want students to accomplish?

3. How would they assess student performance? How could they know what the students learned?

4. How can they meet the needs of individual students and encourage their participation?

Please enter your response as a comment on his post or leave a link to your blog.

Assumptions:

1-An adult will be physically present at all times in the classroom to handle any emergencies.

2-This person will not provide any academic support to you.

3-There are no technical obstacles to prevent communication with your teacher via the Web.

4-All students will have access to the necessary technology for any assigned activities.

First I apologize for not getting anything up this week. We are at the end of a major collaborative project with another school and in the plannning phases of projects with three other schools. Believe it of not, I spent about 10-12 hours on school stuff each day and something had to be cut and updating the blog fell into that category. Yes, it does take more than our 40 minute prep period to get everything ready for the kids. Wow…I think this was my first official whiny post! So this will serve more for a record for me, than to inform everyone of what went on this week

This week classes were short because of CMTs, so progress was a bit slow : ) Kids were given a couple of days to draw their political cartoons, and a couple of days to put them into their voice threads:
