We are starting a unit on the War of 1812 and the star of the unit will be the Star Spangled Banner. Honestly, this is a pretty straight forward week and unit. A good unit for everyone to catch their breathe on…or at least me. The Presidential Primary wikis wore me out : )
Last Friday-we started by talking about symbols and made a flag that would symbolize ourselves. The set of questions you were given to begin brainstorming on symbols are due on Wednesday.
Monday-we will start a very simple straight forward assignment to find information on the causes of the War of 1812. It will be due on Wednesday.
Wednesday-we will peer edit the stories and discuss the questions. You will write the answers to number ten on the board and we will look for patterns.
Thursday-we will watch a short video on the War of 1812 and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. We will also examine the origional verses of the song and translate them into easy to understand teenage language. Need help putting the tune in your head? There is one available on the wiki.
Friday-you will share your translation with the class.
Today I would like to chat about High School sign-ups. Some groups need more info on the differences between levels. I would also like to talk about the tragic automobile accident that occurred affecting members of our team and community — what is your responsibility in the future to prevent something like this from happening? And finally we will take a tour of the Presidential wikis and take a vote on whether to move on to something new this week, or have a conversation about some of the issues you included in the wikis.
OK — seems to be a problem with the links on this post — to save myself some time I deleted everything — just go to the wiki for basically the same directions.
Make sure you post you Presidential Primary Wiki page on our wiki and on our friends in Kansas’ collaborative wiki (Please request membership first!).
Ok…a little behind in updating and this one will be brief. We have been working on wikis that are connected to the Presidential primaries. They will be due next week. By Thursday you should be able to access all of the student work that is in progress. Wednesday we will start off by discussing the results of the New Hampshire primary.
Today we will start off with a HWYW(the extended version).
For the next two weeks we will be diving into the Presidential primaries. We will start off by discussing the difference between a Democrat and Republican and discuss some third parties. Thursday you will complete a questionnaire that will let you see which current candidate for President’s ideas most closely align with yours. Friday you will choose a candidate and begin to complete a multimedia webpage that is aimed at convinicing young voters to select your candidate. These websites will be sent to the candidates and to other people (will be explained in class).
Blog post due Friday — What is the difference between a Democrat and Republican? When you register to vote at age eighteen, what party will you register for and why?
Blog post due next Friday — Predict which candidate for president will win the election in November and why.
