OK…here are the new plans for the books. Trying to get everyone to the same place at the same time has been impossible. Sooooo….here is the new deal. I am going to continue to read rough drafts as they are presented to me instead of trying to collect them all at once. On Friday when you walk in we will bind all books and the will be collected. There are no extensions, there simply cannot be any. They must be sent out on Monday. Over the weekend I will read all of the books. Only books that include all the info in the checklist, are complete with covers and images, have no historical mistakes, and no major grammatical or spelling errors will be sent and accepted for grades. I don’t want to hear any complaints from authors that were lazy and waited until the last second and have their books rejected because they can’t re-write their book next Monday. If you have been lazy about completing the book and it had not been proof read you are taking your chances. I am willing to spend a lot of time after school proof-reading books Wednesday and Thursday. First priority will be books that have authors that have taken the time to use the checklist and kept up with due dates. Keep in mind that it takes about ten+ minutes per book if I get more than twenty on a night, they are all not getting done.

I think the elementary kids are really going to enjoy reading and responding to your books!! You will serve as excellent role models!

This week every class period will be devoted to finishing the children’s books on the War of 1812/Star Spangled Banner for the elementary kids in Amherst, VA. Today we will start off with some simple guidelines and tips and then the rest of the time you will be working on your own. I highly recommend using our Team 8-2 War of 1812 search engine. You can check the wiki for topics for each of your pages if you get stuck.

For those of you with an extra hour this week, check out this 60 year old movie about an American ship carrying $10 million in gold that is mutinied and the Captain is set adrift during the War of 1812.

This week’s blog post:

Contact a student from another country from our blogging buddies list. Leave a comment on their latest post asking them the what do they think of when they hear the words “United States.” What are some symbols they would use to represent the United States. In your post please include the address of the blog you left a comment on, and then include the answer when they reply.

Checklist for this week– make a new page on your wikipage and place work there, or print out and keep in folder:

Monday
Answer the following questions. Determine what each page in your book will be about and the type of picture you will include (example and example). Questions from the movie are on the wiki.
Tuesday
Do additional research for each page. Look for that interesting little “factoid” to breathe some life and curiosity into your pages.

Wednesday
Write the lines for each page (example). Need help figuring out an easy way to type it so it comes out with the print on the bottom of the page? Open up a Publisher document and follow these steps.

Thursday
Create the pictures for each page.

Friday
Finish-up

Remember to go to the wiki and check “Recent Changes” for examples fropm other students.

The results of Super Duper Tuesday will be discussed at the start of class.  Unfortunately at this time I am sad to announce that the rumors are true, I am dropping out of the Presidential race.  While I appreciate the donations and support, I have not won a single primary or delegate.  So it is with deep sadness in which I  resign from the race and throw my full support behind a candidate to be announced at a later date.

Next we will finish the video on the War of 1812.  After it is over we will check out the words to the Star Spangled Banner.  Did you know there is actually more than one verse? For homelearning please translate the first two verses into ordinary everyday english that we can all understand.  You can do it on paper or place it on the wiki.  Your translation will be shared with the class tomorrow.

And don’t forget the blog post due on Friday!

Today and tomorrow we will watch a really cool video on the War of 1812 and the Birth of the Star Spangled Banner. It should reinforce what we have already learned about the causes, and give new information about the actual War and the some guy who wrote a little poem you might have heard of before. While I am not usually big into answering questions while watching a movie, we will have some to complete that I thing will give you a better understanding of the movie’s information.

We we actually start blogging again this week! Today you will be registering for your high school courses. Your post this week will be about high school. What are your hopes, dreams, fears, changes, etc…very open-ended. Go with it wherever you would like to go. Remember to check off your name on the wiki after you post, and follow the blogging rules!!

Also post three comments this week. One of them must be on a blogging buddies blog. Here are some new blogs to check out:

Here at the International School Bangkok in Thailand, we have several elementary school classes with individual student bloggers (ie: each student writes their own blog) and we would love to have some blogging partners around the world! Does anyone have any student bloggers in their class? Check out our student blogs here (linked in the sidebar under Mrs. T’s Class, Mrs. H’s Class, Mrs. R’s Class).

AND…

I have a couple of nine year old student bloggers here who manage their own blogs and would love some feedback from global partners. Look to our class blog Moturoa and look to the right- Oscar, Kieran, Nathan, Miriam, Nicole and Shania.

Poll on the future of our blogs…
